A brief history of the rosary prayer

Introduction

It seems that the form of the rosary prayer was given by the Cistercian monks sometime in the 13th century AD. They performed a prayer using beads on a tie-robe, and they named the prayer the rosary, perceived as an act of offering to Mary a crown of mystical roses.
Though the prayer became somewhat popular by the efforts of St Dominic, by his name Domingo de Guzman (08/08/1170- 06/08/1221), who founded the Dominican Order (Order of Friars Preachers).
However, the roots of the rosary devotion are in the early stages of Christianity, when the very first Council of Ephesus in 431, proclaimed that Mary is invoked as the Mother of God. The fact is relevant as it signs and completes the Hail Mary’s prayer. The first part of Hail Mary’s prayer has as its author the person of St Gabriel, on the Annunciation (Luke 1:28).
Thereafter, the prayer, Canticle of Mary, was proclaimed by Elisabeth, Mary’s cousin (Luke 10-28-42).

However, around the 13th century, the Cistercians formulated a prayer, and the name given was “Rosary”. According to tradition, St Dominic had a vision from St Mary itself. This happened in 1214 AD, through a couple of mystical experiences, in which St Mary revealed the rosary prayer as a way to convert the unfaithful and heretics.

St Dominic was an excellent preacher, whose favourite topic was the divine maternity of Mary.

As an example, in the 13th century, one of the heresies was to reject that Logos (The Word) became flesh; this is the case of the Albigenses- for them, St Mary was an angel who had the mission, beside St John the Evangelist, to speak about what happened in Heaven. Other heretics were the Cathars.

Other historical facts:

  • In 1571 AD, before the Battle of Lepanto, Pope Pius VI invited Christians to pray the Rosary. Christians won, and the victory was attributed to St Mary’s intercession.
    • In 1478 AD, the Beatus Alan de la Roche published The Psalms of Jesus and Mary, while St Alois Maria Grignon de Montfort published The Extraordinary Secret of the Holy Rosary.
    • In the 19th century, a couple of revelations occurred in Lourdes, France, when St Mary revealed to Bernadette Soubirous.

Throughout history, many popes advocated for the Rosary prayer; Pope Leo the 13th and Pope John Paul the 2nd were among the few.
